ABOUT THE PERFORMER
“By allowing for space in its swirling infinity, Rochester’s Vanishing Sun keeps the confusion out of the fusion without restricting its own flavor and flow.” – Frank De Blase, Rochester City Newspaper
“…an innovative sound that is firmly grounded in the roots of funk, jazz, and drum and bass” – Democrat and Chronicle
“This Rochester band mixes old school funk tones and sensibilities with an urgent beat that waxes original and new. Fresh and fun.” – Rochester City Newspaper
Originating as an instrumental Jazz / Drum & Bass Fusion project in late 2016, Vanishing Sun has rapidly evolved into one of the Upstate New York region’s top up and coming artists. With the addition of powerhouse vocalist Zahyia and the release of their second album “After” in 2017, the band is poised and ready to continue to unleash its trademark explosive live performance while ever pushing its own limits in terms of music and creativity.
Coming from a wide range of musical backgrounds and with an age spread that exceeds three decades, the band is composed of internationally touring musicians that have played and toured with the likes of legends such as Chaka Khan, Maceo Parker, and Teddy Pendergrass. With this rare combination of varied musicians, its no wonder that Vanishing Sun has a unique sound… Hiatus Kaiyote meets A Tribe Called Quest, Headhunters meets Flying Lotus, Rage Against the Machine meets Erykah Badu.
The band has embraced an approach that places emphasis on creative freedom and an anything goes philosophy in songwriting and live performance. This culminates in a sound that is at once forward looking while at the same time firmly grounded in the roots of its influences. Funk, Drum&Bass, HipHop, Jazz, R&B, Afrofuturism, and Electronic Music are all combined to give Vanishing Sun its characteristic sound that is as reflective of its varied inspirations as it is of the uncommon diversity of its musicians.
Vanishing Sun exists to perform and delivers an explosive, tight, high energy show. From the Jam Scene to Jazz Festivals, the band has steadily drawn a following from music fans young and old, and from all walks of life.
As of today, we are being advised by the Monroe County Health Department that we will be unable to hold the 2020 Rochester Lilac Festival during the originally planned timeframe of May 8th -17th. As you can imagine, this is painful for all of us. However, we are hopeful and optimistic that we will be able to reschedule.
As time progresses, and more information is known, we’ll be letting you, our valued Festival participants and attendees know if, and when we plan to reschedule the Festival.
Hang in there and stay healthy.
